In the history of every club, there are moments that are forever etched in the memories of fans, serving as true milestones. For the Portmen, one such unforgettable chapter is undoubtedly the 1986/87 season – a campaign that brought us Ekstraklasa silver and forever defined one of the most brilliant periods in the annals of Pogoń Szczecin. These were not cup battles or returns to the top flight, but consistent, league-based fundamental work that elevated us to national heights.
Under the charismatic leadership of Leszek Jezierski, the Portmen at that time forged a team of extraordinary determination and solidity. Jezierski, with his experience and tactical acumen, managed to unite individual talents into a collective that understood each other on the pitch without words. It was he who instilled in the team the belief that Szczecin could compete with the biggest names in Polish football. There was no room for prima donnas; what mattered was working for the good of the entire squad.
The roster boasted names that still bring smiles to the faces of older fans today. In goal, Marek Ostrowski stood firm, while the defense, led by Waldemar Jaskulski, formed an impenetrable barrier. In midfield, Jarosław Kaczmarczyk and Marek Leśniak dictated the play, while offensive prowess came from players like Andrzej Kryszałowicz and Jarosław Araszkiewicz. It was a blend of seasoned experience and youthful enthusiasm, creating a machine that could face any opponent in the country.
The season started promisingly, and with each subsequent matchday, the Portmen gained momentum. Our Stadium became a true fortress, from which rivals rarely left with even a single point. The fans created an incredible atmosphere, pushing the team forward, and the shouts of “Pogoń gol!” echoed throughout Szczecin. Victories tasted exceptionally sweet, and a draw on home turf was almost treated as a defeat. The battle for top spots continued until the very end, and Pogoń proved its ability to maintain pace and pressure.
In the league's final sprint, Pogoń Szczecin bravely fought for the Polish Championship, ultimately ceding only to Legia Warszawa. The silver medals, though not gold, were nevertheless a delicious fruit of hard work and confirmation that the Portmen deservedly found themselves among the country's elite. It was an achievement of dreams, forever enshrined in the club's annals as its greatest league success.
That season was more than just statistics and a final league table. It was, above all, a testament to passion, determination, and an extraordinary bond between the team and the city. The silver of 1987 is a legend that continues to inspire and reminds us of what Pogoń Szczecin is capable of when the entire community moves in one direction. May the memory of that silver dream of the Portmen live forever in the hearts of every true fan!
